LIVESTRONG Day is the Lance
Armstrong Foundation's (LAF) grassroots advocacy initiative to unify
people affected by cancer and to raise awareness about cancer
surviorship issues on a national level and in local communities
across the country.
NAtional LIVESTRONG Day 2007
occured on Wednesday, May 16th. Vanessa Underwood attended the event
in Washington DC with the LAnce Armstrong Foundation. She and 200
other advocates along with Lance Armstong met with Senators, asking
for an increase in the funding for cancer research. She also
organized a local event, STRENGTH IN NUMBERS in support of
this cause, which she plans to repeat each year.
On Friday, May 18th, despite the rainy
weather, many people in the community came to the Atkinson Community
Center wearing yellow to show support for LIVESTRONG day.
All participants were given a yellow
LIVESTRONG band, and wrote wishes and memories on fabric
squares that were displayed on the wall, and will be made into a
quilt.
Vanessa held a 30 minute work-out
session for anyone who wanted to participate.
There were surviors, family members,
caregivers and friends who have lost loved ones to cancer. There
were testimonials and prayers. And there was strength in numbers as
the group held hands and formed a circle around the room and showed
Unity in the community.
